Too hot to sleep

Too hot to sleep
Too hot to sleep is a complaint people often have on their first couple of days of a Portuguese holiday

These sunny and hot days that we are currently having are great for the tourists and the Portuguese economy.

For those of us lucky enough to live here or have a holiday home in Portugal the warm weather means constant watering of the garden. It can also mean that you are dreading going to bed at night because of the amount of radiated (stored up) heat that is in  is the bedrooms.

I do know of some people who resort to risking being eaten alive by the mozzies and sleep outside on their balconies and verandas at this time of year. Other people sleep in their adegas or wine cellars and others sleep during the day with all the windows and doors open enjoying the cooling in the breeze.

When  it is too hot to sleep trying to find a cool location to sleep can drive you crazy. Your house and bedrooms may be hot at night and you could be thinking about buying ceiling fans and or air conditioners. You would think that your house is insulated wouldn’t you so it should not be this hot in summer or cold in winter?

Is your house insulated? How do you know? How can you be sure? OK so it’s a newly built modern house but can you really be sure that it is insulated well and to the right specification.

It will not take long for you to start seeing the tell-tale signs if the walls and ceilings are not adequately protected. It always disappoints me when we come across a client who does not have any insulation.

Amazing when you think that there are clearly defined rules and regulations as for the level of insulation that should be used. (in 2015- 40mm) of rigid insulation is expected to be installed in walls and ceilings.

Expected but not inspected you could say. Is it that important in our lovely summer climate.

It depends upon who you are but as a builder I would have to say yes indeed it is. To make your life more comfortable in Portugal

If you have a home in Portugal that is too hot in summer or cold in winter?
