Moving blocks of stone
How do you move large blocks of stone without resorting to crane hire or employing a rugby team
You can of course use a crane or an attachment like a pair of tongs which grips the stone these “tongs” can be fitted to the buckets of earth movers or the back of tractors. The will of course ultimately be a lot of occasions were you need to maneuver and cajole large stone to get them in place when building a wall for instance. You may be surprised to see techniques direct from the construction of the pyramids. Wooden rollers. Pinch bars and ropes……not forgetting a lot of muscle.
When moving large stones it is always at least a two man job not so much to help with the lifting but to make sure that everyone keeps safe. A second pair of eyes is always useful.
When a stone falls it happens very quickly and is not something that you can or should try to prevent when moving blocks of stone as this is where the major accidents happen.
Cutting openings in walls for doors or windows is a very risky business. Stones overhead supported just by being jammed together can be a recipe for disaster if not worked on by very experienced craftsmen. Saving 300 Euros is nothing in comparison to losing a arm or worse.
