Many of our clients come to casteloconstruction with the same problem. They have a property with either no stairs to the ground floor, stairs that are effectively too narrow and steep to be safe or practical and not enough room to construct a staircase.
Basically its the same problem. We want a proper safe staircase in our home !
Because a staircase takes up a lot of room whether its spiral, straight or returned on three sides. There is no getting a way from it. We do have an off the wall solution to this particular problem or should I say a through the wall solution. Take this house for instance. Originally the house had a narrow wooden veranda which had wooden ladder like steps to the ground. These had long since rotted away so we were starting from a blank canvas. There was not enough room inside the house for a flight of stairs so we looked elsewhere and came up with a small curved stone goat shelter which was attached to the side of the house. Although it was only 1.5 meters high we were able to knock it down and rebuild it upwards providing the space for a nice flight of stairs and access to the first floor.
We took advantage of the curved walls to make a curved staircase which is a very attractive feature.
Take a look at your house is there an outside wall that we can cut a doorway in at the top and bottom so that we can build the stairs outside the house footprint.
This will also provide space under the stairs perhaps for a small bathroom or additional storage.
