Portugal keeping your home cool

Keeping your home cool

Very often we are thinking about keeping our home warm but of course with temperatures out there reaching towards 40 degrees cooling becomes higher on the agenda Portugal keeping your home cool.

There are two main ways in which you home becomes what feels like an oven and impossible to sleep in.

One is heat from the sun shinning directly upon the roof and walls or in through the windows. The hard materials such as brick, stone and roof tiles can store up the heat and transfer it inside your house. If you house is surrounded by patios this same heat transfer can also happen.

The other is hot air ( not from gossiping ) heated air entering the house can also heat up the internal walls making the temperature rise.

The solution is shade and insulation.

Here is a fantastic source of ideas and inspiration http://www.houzz.com/shade-structure

I don’t want to dwell on what particular shade you should use as there are many hundreds of solutions to this over heating problem. Traditional ideas would be alpendres, verandahs, roof overhangs, pineapple palms and other natural tree shade.

Then of course there is the insulation which is vital to the comfort of your home all year round. Roofs. walls, doors and windows. Concentrate upon insulating these areas and not only will you improve the year round comfort of your home but you will save money on heating and cooling bills as well.

Mosquito blinds and shutters can also help by allowing the cooler evening air to flood your bedrooms cooling the prior to bedtime. Check out these links for more information
