Curved openings in stone walls

Curved openings in stone walls

We are often asked to cut the usual openings for doors and windows into old stone houses here in Portugal. Our teams have lots of experience in doing this kind of work but are still wary of potential accidents due to the amount and weight of stove involved.

We are only rarely asked to construct or repair arched  or curved openings in stone walls, arched doorways or rustic curved openings in stone walls which is a shame as they can add a certain style and focal point to any new build or refurbishment providing an interior or exterior design statement. They make your house more memorable and stand out for perspective buyers.

With an arch or curved openings in stone walls you are able to add home design features that are unique. It could be that people think arches in a stone wall cost a lot more money that a normal opening but in fact with the right skilled craftsmen the additional cost in constructing an arch in stone is minimal.

Stone arches are generally seen in stone structures, door and window openings, for verandas, garage doorways, porches, cellars, bridges and so on.

Stone arches with a large span are not seen as frequently because reinforced concrete is both of thinner profile (takes up less room) and is cheaper to build. You can of course use reinforced concrete to construct the structure of a large arch and attach thin pieces of natural stone “Natural Stone Veneer”  so that the arch looks like it was constructed of solid stone.

Depending upon the size of arch that you want to include into your build or refurbishment walls will have to inspected for strength and the appropriate remedial work carried out as a stone arch is more liable to settle and crack if the supporting, footings, pillars or walls are not strong enough.

The technical names used to describe parts of an arch are old-fashioned and confusing. Abutments, Piers, Springing line, Keystones and the Skewbacks.

None of which are important if all you want is an attractive stone arch built on your property
