The stone walls built a hundred years ago were built without the benefit of cement. At the very best lime mortar was used and at the worst earth and animal muck was used to fill the gaps between the stones. Then small stones and stone chippings were driven between the stones to stop the earth being washed out. Tell us about your requirements

These walls although built with rudimentary materials have stood the test of time. You can see where this wall has been raised the 100-year-old wall (lower part) has a lot of the stone chips missing. The new wall has the benefit of concrete and cement mortar to hold the chips in place and will outlast us all. The main difficulties in stone wall building and repairing is firstly cutting the stone to produce a nice right-handed flat side or “face” Next you have to keep both sides of the stone wall vertical despite as in this case the wall being curved.

A piece of flexible steel like reinforcing bars can be used as a guide. The rest is up to you, your skill, strength, sweat and persistence. Oh and or course good quality stone.
