Have you thought about having a pool it’s a dream that many people aspire too
Especially when they think of moving to Portugal and renovating a stone house or building new.
The first concerns when thinking about having a pool are usually and understandably what will it cost, how big will the pool be, how deep and where will we locate it.
Then there is will it have a liner or glass mosaic tiles, ladders or steps, lighting, electric pool cover(costs permitting) and what about the patio, pool surround, and planting.
Oh yes and a shaded area for dining alfresco!
You have to admit there is a lot to think about when you have decided that you are having a pool.
From a practical point of view, we would have to say that you have missed a major point or three from your pool decision list.
Is the ground suitable for installing a swimming pool of the type and depth that you want?
Is there enough access to excavate the pool foundations and where do you want all of the earth to go.
Do I need planning permission or a license?
The final question of who is going to build the pool is possibly the easiest to answer. Castelo Construction can visit your home or building project. Tell you if the conditions to build a pool are in your chosen location.
They can advise on all aspects of pool design from depth, interior finish and even the type of patio or pool cover that will be most suitable.

Looking after a swimming pool is rather like looking after the lawn back in the UK and the work required is as regular but in this sunshine not as tedious.
The actual work involved in looking after a swimming pool is not hard at all you just have to understand what is happening to the water.
Take for instance a nice new swimming pool just filled with water its Perfect! Leave it three or four days and three things will happen. 1, The water level goes down with evaporation 2, The water starts to go green and cloudy because the chlorine level is reduced by the sun light. 3, Dust ,leaves and bits of rubbish will have blown in floating on the surface and settling on the bottom.
Add adults and children using the pool and 3 additional things will happen 4, Sun cream, sweat, pee and other human related residues will make the pool water cloudy. 5, There will be more dirt added to the pool from peoples feet. 6, The water level will go down due to jumping in and splashing and the water we take out on our bodies when we leave the pool.
So as you can see in three days the water balance and pool cleanliness has turned bad rapidly. What to do? Correct the chlorine level with a “chlorine shock” granulated chlorine application scattered across the water.
Check the PH level and make it higher or lower to get the correct level by adding PH+ or PH-
Clean the surface of the pool of any floating insects, toys, paper or leaves with the pool net on the end of the long pole.
Use the underwater hoover attachment on the long pole to hoover very slowly the entire floor area of the pool this is when it is really like cutting the grass.
If you don’t do it slowly the debris on the bottom of the pool will just swirl up in the water and settle on the pool bottom again. I always think of a Jamaican pool cleaner who looked like he had died standing up when he was cleaning the hotel pool he was so slow. Empty the rubbish baskets in the skimmers. Add a slow release pool tablet to the basket and put the pool pump timer back on.
We are often asked for before and after photographs of our work here are some of a swimming pool before and after.
Many clients make them into a memento to hang on the wall.
Of course when we are in the thick of it carrying out the work we often can’t remember what the particular projects looked like before we started work. Take this swimming pool for instance. The house had views to die for. Even our Portuguese craftsmen were impressed with the view.
Unfortunately this particular swimming pool had major problems which the new owner recognized and decided to put right.
With regard to the swimming pool the problem was that the base was not strong enough, the swimming pool structure was erected incorrectly and the pool had sunk into the ground so that the waterline was not parallel with the top edge of the pool. This is a fundamental error which is noticeable by everyone who comes into the garden.
Because of the above there was also a water leak which had washed away the support for the patio which caused it to sag and collapse. The previous owner obviously had not been able top get the cowboy builders back to fix it.
Take a look at what our swimming pool team did.
You can see them using a flexible hose full or water to make sure the level is perfect. This method has been used for hundreds of years. If the sunlight is too bright we often use a little red wine at each end of the tube so that we can see the level more clearly.
This pool is a liner pool.
Here you can see the steps involved in installing the liner.
