Keeping out the rain in Portugal

Keeping out the rain in central Portugal

Keeping out the rain in central Portugal.  Fortunately we don’t have a lot of rain in Portugal.

Just enough to grow the crops and make things green for most of the year.

We do however also have just enough to make your home damp and susceptible to wet and dry rot.

The issue is that if certain materials in the fabric of your home become wet on a regular basis they will become infected with spores of the dry rot fungus.

This will spread thought any slightly humid areas of brick or stone feeding on any wood in its path.

Not soggy wet wood but  wood that gets damp on a regular basis. Take the example were a roof tile has slipped out of position due to a roof joist bending because of age or wood worm The rain falls onto the roof joist and then onto the ceiling below where it pools and soaks into the untreated wood.

The heat from the room below created the very best of habitat for wet rot to multiply. If there is enough rain it can run down the walls and soak into the first floor and plaster. Now we have a recipe for disaster. The roof, ceiling and floor over time will collapse. It is surprising just how quick things escalate to this level of problem.

It’s easy to fix at a price but far better to act quickly and save the headache!
